Is Selling Diabetic Test Strips Worth It?
Sometimes. If you have a stack of unopened boxes with a long time left before they expire, selling them can put real money back in your pocket. If you have a few boxes close to their expiration dates, a product nobody is buying right now, or boxes that aren’t factory sealed, the answer is usually no. The difference comes down to a short list of questions you can answer before you ship anything.
Selling diabetic test strips is usually worth it when your boxes are factory sealed with at least 10 months left, your product has a current price above $0, and your total clears the minimum order. This guide walks through each check, using real numbers from the current price list, so you can decide before you spend time on it.
The Honest Answer: It Depends on Four Things
1. Are your boxes eligible?
Boxes must be factory sealed and undamaged. The expiration date decides how much they are worth:
- 10 months or more left: full list price.
- 7 to 9 months left, or small imperfections on the box: 50% of list price.
- Damaged boxes, or under 7 months left: no payout. Please do not ship these.
Leave the pharmacy label on the box. Peeling it off usually damages the box. Supplies obtained through government programs such as Medicaid are not accepted, so check how yours were paid for. Our post on what we won’t buy and why covers the exclusions.
2. Is your product listed above $0?
Prices depend on the brand, the box type, and the box count. At the time of writing, a 100-count Freestyle Lite retail box is listed at $30, while a 50-count Accu-Chek Aviva Plus box is listed at $7. Some products, including many NFR and mail-order boxes, are listed at $0, which means there is no current offer. Do not ship those. Prices change, so open the price list, match the name and color of your box, and enter your quantities to see your total before you do anything else.
3. Will your total clear the minimum order?
The price list states a minimum order of $75 and asks sellers with a smaller total to wait until they have more supplies. Dates can change the math. Here are some illustrations using the current list, which will change when prices do:
| Example | Listed total | Clears $75? |
|---|---|---|
| 3 boxes of Accu-Chek Aviva Plus, 100-count, at $30 each, 10+ months left | $90 | Yes |
| 4 boxes of Accu-Chek Aviva Plus, 50-count, at $7 each | $28 | No, wait for more supplies |
| 8 boxes of Accu-Chek Smartview, 50-count, at $9.50 each | $76 | Barely |
| The first example, but with 8 months left (50% of list) | $45 | No |
4. Can you ship in time?
Time matters in two ways. First, boxes close to the 10-month line can slip into the 50% tier while they are in transit, so leave a cushion. Second, the price list has noted a holiday shutdown from December 20 to January 2, so plan your shipment around it.
What It Actually Costs You
The mailing label is prepaid, so the real costs are your time and the risk of sending something that does not qualify. Checking boxes and packing them takes some effort, but the larger risk is shipping boxes that will not be accepted. The price list says boxes that are damaged, short-dated, or expired will not be purchased and may have to be returned at your expense. That is why the checks above come first.
When Selling Is Clearly Worth It
- You switched meters or moved to a CGM and have unopened boxes left over, with 10 or more months on the dates.
- You have several boxes of a product that is currently listed at a healthy price, enough to clear the minimum.
- You are clearing out supplies after a loved one has passed away. See our guide on what to do with unused diabetic supplies after a loved one passes away.
- Your strips would otherwise expire unused. Our post on why selling beats letting strips expire explains the trade-off.
When It Probably Is Not Worth It
- Your boxes have under 7 months left, are damaged, or have been opened.
- Your product is listed at $0.
- You have only a few low-value boxes and would fall short of the minimum.
- Your supplies came through a government program such as Medicaid.
- You still use the strips, for example, as a backup if your CGM fails. Keep what you need.

Sell, Keep, or Let Them Expire?
| Option | Makes sense when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sell | Boxes are sealed, undamaged, have 10+ months left, and you do not need them. | A little effort, and a payout that depends on the price list and the minimum. |
| Keep | You use them or want a backup supply. | They age, and the value drops as the dates get closer. |
| Let them expire | Nothing qualifies and nobody is buying your product. | No return, though our guide on what to do with expired diabetic test strips covers the next steps. |
A Quick Way to Check Before You Commit
- Read the expiration date on every box and count the months left.
- Check that each box is sealed and undamaged, and leave the labels on.
- Open the price list, match each box by name and color, and enter your quantities.
- If the total clears the minimum, request a free prepaid label or kit. The How It Works page walks through the process.
- Pack the boxes snugly in a sturdy box and ship them.

How much can I get for a box of test strips?
